Fashionable History: John Rawlings

John Rawlings was one of the most prolific fashion photographers of the Mid-Century. In a career spanning from the 1930's through the 1960's he shot over 200 covers for Vogue and Glamour. He experimented with light, color, and shadow much like his contemporaries at the time (Horst P. Horst, Irving Penn, and Hoyningen-Heune) but unlike them, he brought a truly American sensibility to his photos. This became one of the smartest moves Conde-Nast would make helping define the American look in fashion over several decades.

These are some of my favorites. It was really hard to choose!

Fashionable History: Marilyn Parties

LIFE.com has published a fantastic slideshow of unpublished photos of a then 25 year old Marilyn Monroe. The year is 1952 and she has just won the "Henrietta" Award for Best Young
Box Office Personality at a party thrown by the Foreign Press Association of Hollywood (an event that will become the Golden Globes). A few months after winning this award Marilyn will land her first cover on LIFE Magazine. Marilyn is wearing a gorgeous red velvet gown and a fur stole. Oh how I wish these photos were in color but they are beautiful in black and white and show a very glam Marilyn!
Shot by Loomis Dean.

Mid-Week Inspiration: Glamour Girls in Glasses

I wear glasses from time to time. At the movies, while driving, etc. I am lucky that I don't have to wear them all of the time but that may change as I get older. Here is some inspiration of glamorous ladies like Marilyn Monroe and Rosario Dawson sporting specs. Why glasses aren't used more often in fashion I'll never know.
