Mid-Week Inspiration: Tweed

When ever thoughts of  an ideal Autumn or Winter wardrobe come to mind, as they do this time of year, I gravitate toward tweeds. I love the texture, flecks of color, and sturdy warmth it provides. I also love the classic styling that always looks chic.

Classic Chanel. 1950's.

Menswear inspired. Biba. 1960's/70's.

Sears. 1950's. Yes! To each of those pencil skirts!

What fabric are you drawn to time and time again? What is your go to Autumn wardrobe staple?

Style Icon: Bunny Yeager

I've been wanting to feature Bunny Yeager on my Style Icon series for quite a while now. Upon hearing the sad news last night that she passed away in Florida at the age of 85, I set out to not waste anymore time.

Bunny was born Linnea Eleanor Yeager in Pennsylvania. Her family moved to Miami when she was 17. With her 5'9" frame, she quickly became a sought after model.

Her interests didn't stop there. She soon went behind the camera. She loved to photograph nudes and women in bikinis that she would make herself. Being a woman and used to being on the other side of the camera, she made it easy for her subjects to pose. Bettie Page is her most famous model. She helped launch Bettie's career showing a softer side, than the bondage photos she had previously taken in New York.

I really love her self portraits. Bunny is gorgeous and embodies the complete look of her photography. You get the feeling that it was a complete lifestyle. Her photos are not contrived.

With her bleach blonde looks she is the epitome of 1950's beach style.

Beyond her style, Bunny will always remain an inspiration.

Fashionable History: Winter Fashion By Decade- 1950's

This is the fourth installment of the Winter Fashion by Decade series. The fabulous 1950's! In case you are just joining us now, click the links to see the 1920's, 1930's, and the 1940's. Next week will be the final decade- the 1960's!

Wool suits are popular, especially incorporating classic textiles like tweed. Fur is still important, especially for accessories.

I love this! A great illustration of the various hats and the popular youthful look of the '50's.

Winter sports are popular. I love that they skiied in regular clothes! Yet, they are still very stylish!

Mink, mink, mink! You had to have a mink! Especially given to you by your husband!

Early 1950's coats. I love all of the different silhouette options!
One of each, please!

Shop News: Bullet Bras and More!

As you all may be aware, I have real soft spot for vintage lingerie. I have recently added some amazing pieces to my Etsy shop; The Sparkling Cocktail, that I think you are really going to enjoy! You may also remember my love of the bullet bra. I found two truly historic pieces that if they fit me, I wouldn't part with.

One of those bullet bras is this side wire plunge 1950's "Cheers" by Harriette Ross bra. That's right, the wire is in the center alongside the plunge. No underwire. What I love about this is the strategic darting to create a true conical shape. While trying to find more information on Harriette Ross, I came across this vintage advertisement showcasing the same bra. Now, to find one in all of those colors! You can view the complete listing for this Pin-up Queen here

You know I love vintage slips, and this one is a gem! Mint condition and with the most darling rosebud lace. And that bow! When they say "They don't make things like this anymore" this slip was on their minds! You can see the full listing for this 1950's Barbizon slip here
Bullet bra- No.2. This is a Life-Bra by Formfit. An amazing find due to the fact that it is a longline cinch bra as well. Formfit was a premier lingerie manufacturer in the 40's through the 60's. They released the Life-Bra line as a more affordable model. This vintage ad is pretty close to the one I found- just not as long. Expert stitching give these wireless cones their shape! You can see the full listing for this 1940's Life-Bra here

Lastly, I have this beauty! This 1940's rayon peignoir is not to be missed. Feel like a true hollywood starlet as you float around your dressing room! In a gorgeous antique white it's also a great wedding piece. You can see the full listing of this 1940's Femicraft dressing gown here

My Vintage Vanity: Vintage Lingerie

I've been very lucky to recently find some amazing vintage lingerie to offer you all in my Etsy shop; The Sparkling Cocktail. I love vintage lingerie and to be honest, I would love to keep all of this for myself. But that wouldn't be fair, would it? Some of these pieces still have the original tags. Here's a look at what's new:
Bobbins And Bombshells, My Vintage Vanity, Vintage Lingerie,

So pretty! This pale pink peignoir is hard to date with elements from several decades. My approximation is late 40's early 50's. I love the sleeves!

Bobbins And Bombshells, My Vintage Vanity, Vintage Lingerie,

1950's bubble gum pink tulle crinoline!! With original tags! The tag says "Widest Sweep" and they aren't kidding!

Bobbins And Bombshells, My Vintage Vanity, Vintage Lingerie,

Nothing looks better under vintage dresses than vintage foundation garments! This 1960's longline cinch bra will hold you all in and feel pretty! Think Joan Harris on Mad Men.

Bobbins And Bombshells, My Vintage Vanity, Vintage Lingerie,

This unique sixties nightgown is so adorable! Red nylon chiffon with Spanish fans! Complete with a pocket! I would live in this on my days off!

I also have a coupon code I give to my blog readers, Facebook fans, and Twitter followers! Don't forget to use SPARKLE for 15% off anything in my shop; The Sparkling Cocktail

Cheers!

The June/July 2013 issue of L'Officiel Singapore takes us back to the days of pompadours and beehives in it's editorial; West Side Story.  Despite the title, I think it's more fitting of my recent trip to Memphis. Stay tuned for tomorrow's post where I share vacation photos!

Mid-Week Inspiration: The French Riviera in the 1950's and 1960's

I can't think of a Summer when the French Riviera in the 50's and the 60's hasn't been my style inspiration. This year is no exception. I will not be going anywhere near the Riviera this year, but I can at least pretend, even here on hot New York City pavement.

Brigitte Bardot and Grace Kelly are the epitome of Riviera chic to me. If only I was a blonde!

Fit and flare summer dresses are on my style agenda this season! Of course in gingham and eyelet!

Yes, yes, to this convertible! Ahhh the view!

Love this whole look!

I have the brunette version of this hair. I just need the sun hat. I really do!
