Retro Looks In The Modern World: Sunny and Sexy

As much as the modern fashion world looks forward it also continually looks back in time.
Here we explore Retro Looks in the Modern World.

This poolside shoot for the May 2011 issue of Vogue Italia is a lot of fun! I love her "Catherine Deneuve" styled hair. I don't know about you but I'm ready for Summer!

Fashionable History: Swim Wear By Decade- 1950's

For my Fashionable History segment this summer I am exploring swim wear by decade. Here we are at the 1950's. Swim wear becomes form fitting and curvaceous. The hourglass look is in. Shaping and support are key factors and swimsuits resemble corsets in many ways. Strapless one pieces are favored over the bikini but are very sexy with bias shaping, ruching, and padded cone shaped bra cups. As shorter curled hairstyles become important, so does the swim cap to protect the hair from swimming. Here's a look at some gorgeous photos.

1950s swimwear

These ladies are wearing serious suits to swim in with the funniest swim caps!

1950s swimwear Gorgeous use of plaid with bias shaping and a ruffle at the bust.

1950s swimwear A great shot of the popular ruched style on the left and chevron stripes on the right.

Fashionable History: Swimwear By Decade- 1920's

In the 1920's swimwear started revealing the body more then ever before. The modern maillot was invented. The adrogynous athletic tank style of the maillot suited the fashions of the 20's as women became liberated from long skirts. Even though they were made in wool jersey and often worn with little booties these suits are the forerunners of the suits we wear today.
This picture is tiny, but the girls here "jazz" up their suits with flapper hats!

Although this pic doesn't actully show swim suits, it is too adorable not to share. Parasols were
your best sun protection back then.

I love these ladies!
They have it all, decorated maillots, parasol, hats, and musical instruments.
Adorable!
My "Fashionable History" segment this summer is Swimwear by Decade. Last week was the 1900's. Next week, 1930's!
