Shop News: Bullet Bras and More!

As you all may be aware, I have real soft spot for vintage lingerie. I have recently added some amazing pieces to my Etsy shop; The Sparkling Cocktail, that I think you are really going to enjoy! You may also remember my love of the bullet bra. I found two truly historic pieces that if they fit me, I wouldn't part with.

One of those bullet bras is this side wire plunge 1950's "Cheers" by Harriette Ross bra. That's right, the wire is in the center alongside the plunge. No underwire. What I love about this is the strategic darting to create a true conical shape. While trying to find more information on Harriette Ross, I came across this vintage advertisement showcasing the same bra. Now, to find one in all of those colors! You can view the complete listing for this Pin-up Queen here

You know I love vintage slips, and this one is a gem! Mint condition and with the most darling rosebud lace. And that bow! When they say "They don't make things like this anymore" this slip was on their minds! You can see the full listing for this 1950's Barbizon slip here
Bullet bra- No.2. This is a Life-Bra by Formfit. An amazing find due to the fact that it is a longline cinch bra as well. Formfit was a premier lingerie manufacturer in the 40's through the 60's. They released the Life-Bra line as a more affordable model. This vintage ad is pretty close to the one I found- just not as long. Expert stitching give these wireless cones their shape! You can see the full listing for this 1940's Life-Bra here

Lastly, I have this beauty! This 1940's rayon peignoir is not to be missed. Feel like a true hollywood starlet as you float around your dressing room! In a gorgeous antique white it's also a great wedding piece. You can see the full listing of this 1940's Femicraft dressing gown here

My View: Jean Paul Gaultier Exhibit

This past weekend, I went to see the Gaultier exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum. I've long been a fan and some of my favorite pieces from over the years were on display. So many fashion memories! The collection was quite extensive and showed his pret a porter, haute couture and costume work. If you are in the area, it's a must see!
Here's a look at some of my shots:

Blush and black....one of my favorites!

I remember this knit dress over layers of cream tulle. Stunning!

A Gaultier exhibit is not complete with out THE Madonna suit. Amazing!

...And of course Gaultier stripes! Love how the stripes on this dress turn into strips on the train.

Magnifique!

Fashionable History: The Bullet Bra

Did I ever tell you that I got the What Katie Did Bullet Bra that was On My Wish List? Well, I did plus a whole lot more! I got the Harlow Bra in Vintage Peach and I love it. It's pictured above with the complete set. I did get the padding too as recommended for my 32B's. This cone is a real cone so I need all of the help that I can get! I love it with my vintage dresses that were, quite frankly designed with this type of lingerie in mind.

All of this fun, got me wondering about the history of the bullet bra so I did a little research:

The Bullet Bra originated in the 40's. Since it was Wartime, the name makes sense. Brassiere makers were experimenting with different kind of stitching  and insets to give us girls a lift. Underwires won't be used for a couple decades later.

A great example of creative stitching and shapes used to give an uplifted cone shape. My Harlow Bra is a near replica!

Marilyn made the Bullet Bra popular in the 50's. Pin-ups and girl next door types a like loved the shape it gave them under sweaters. They were called "Sweater Girls".

In the 60's the popularity wained as underwires were used and a more natural and smaller shape was desired. Madonna and Jean Paul Gaultier brought it back in the early 90's where she wore the extreme cones as outerwear.

If you're like me, you may have a hard time finding an authentic vintage one in your size. The modern manufacturer What Katie Did makes new ones as well as other retro inspired lingerie and swimwear to ease your hunt! I love this two tone one called the Marlene. It's next on my list!

On My Wish List: What Katie Did Bullet Bra

This lovely Bullet Bra from What Katie Did won't stay on my wish list for long. In a two weeks I will be on vacation in sunny LA. Once there I am making a bee line to the What Katie Did boutique to get myself this bra. I've been wanting one for a while and now that this UK brand is stateside it makes it easier to try on. I love this look and it's time to take the plunge. Do you have one? Do you wear it on a daily basis or only with vintage? What do you think?

You don't think she got this look naturally do you?
