Mid-Week Inspiration: Lana Turner in The Postman Always Rings Twice

When I first saw The Postman Always Rings Twice starring the lovely Lana Turner, I immediately fell in love with this dress. I have always wanted it!
I love the pockets and that large keyhole neckline!

I also love this shorts ensemble. If only I had those legs!

Well, if I can get my act together, I can recreate these looks as part of the That's Sew Cinematic sew-along! I'm running out of time as the finish is in May but I'm really hoping to turn this Mid-Week Inspiration into a future My Projects post!

Do you have any pattern suggestions? With my busy work schedule, I don't have enough time to draft and drape my own.
Are you participating in the sew-along too? If not check out Rhinestones and Telephones for more information on this super fun project!

Retro Looks In The Modern World: Aime Le Cinema

As much as the modern fashion world looks forward it also continually looks back in time. Here we explore Retro Looks in the Modern World.

Lily Cole looks amazing in this editorial called " Aime Le Cinema" featured in Elle France (May 2010). Photographer Kayt Jones has exquisitely captured a true film noir cinematic quality here and the clothes and hair styles are to die for!

Retro Looks In The Modern World: Sharin Foo of The Raveonettes

I fell in love with The Raveonettes with the release of their first album in 2002, Whip It On. Mixing 1950's rock 'n roll, 60's garage, a strong Jesus and Mary Chain influence, and a dark film noir cinematic sound had me enthralled. Six years later I'm still intrigued and will be seeing them perform for the third time tonight!! Sharin Foo, the bassist/vocalist, has become one of the coolest ladies in rock without even trying. I love her vintage style. A modern Hitchcock Blonde with a guitar.

Retro Looks In The Modern World: Dior S/S 2010

I nearly died when I saw the Christian Dior Spring 2010 RTW collection shown in Paris earlier this month. Inspired by my favorite loves... film noir, lingerie, and femme fatales... you can see why! Galliano was specifically inspired by Lauren Bacall (image above) and it showed on the runway where the models wore Bacall hair and a serious face. Here are some of my favorite looks from the collection.

Mid-Week Inspiration: The Lady Noire

Last week I presented the Chanel mini-film Train de Nuit. This week's inspiration is Dior's The Lady Noire, (chapter 1; The Lady Noire Affaire). Just under 7 minutes, this film/advert takes us back to the film noir days of the 40's with intriguing music, dark shadows, and a confusing plot. The stunning actress Marion Cotillard is reunited with director Olivier Dahan, both from La Vie en Rose fame. Cleverly this film shows us the wonderful Christian Dior accessories in her Lady Dior bag and my favorite, her shoes. Want more? Go to the Lady Dior site for behind the scenes footage and the making of the bag!

Mid-Week Inspiration: Lanvin Fall 2009

lanvin fall 2009 rtw Alber Elbaz is always a genious but his Fall 2009 Ready to Wear collection for Lanvin has me weak in the knees. This collection is for a modern day femme fatale straight out of a film noir. Even the runway looked like a wet sidewalk. I love the draping and folds on a simple sheath silhouette paired with gloves and pumps. I am also inspired to make more feather headbands!

Mid-Week Inspiration: Bogart and Bacall

In keeping with my Valentine mood, this week's Mid-Week Inspiration is my favorite film noir couple, Bogart and Bacall. Humphrey Bogart met Lauren Bacall while filming To Have and Have Not in 1944 . Bogart was 45 and married but instantly attracted to the very young 19 year old Bacall. He mentored her as this was her first film and a relationship was born. After divorcing his wife he married Bacall in 1945 and they remained married until his death in 1957. They had two children, a boy, Stephen, named after Bogart's character in To Have and Have Not and a girl, Leslie, named after Bogart's actor friend Leslie Howard who was killed in WWII.
The couple filmed four movies together. Their chemistry is fun to watch and the films themselves are film noir masterpieces.

To Have and Have Not (1944). Bacall's screen debut and a great one. Her zingers and one liners are a treat. You'd never know she's 19. I also love Bogart's high waisted jeans.

The Big Sleep (1946). Bogart as Phillip Marlowe, I swoon! Good suspense and intrigue.

Dark Passage (1947). On my Netflix queue.

Key Largo (1948). Most likely the most popular one, but my least favorite. Still worth watching.
